How to Finally Show Up Online (Without Overthinking)

Paragraph

You ever stare at your phone, fully intending to post something, and then suddenly your brain turns into that spinning beach ball of death? What should I say? Do I look weird? What if people judge me? Boom. Just like that, you’ve talked yourself out of showing up online—again.

I get it. I was you. But here’s the truth: You can overthink yourself right out of growing your business. So today, I’m breaking down the three biggest blocks that kept me from showing up and how I finally got over them (after much kicking, screaming, and procrastination).

Block #1: Hiding Behind Your Business

Picture this: A 1950s mom in an apron, and her kid clinging to it like their life depends on it. That apron? That’s your business. And that kid? That’s you, refusing to step out from behind the “safe” content—market stats, listings, generic tips—and actually show up.

The problem? People don’t work with market stats. They don’t hire your listings. They work with you.

We’re all nosy little gremlins who want to peek behind the curtain. What’s your process? What’s your daily chaos? What’s that thing on your desk that you always have nearby? Show us the mess. Let us into your world. That’s what builds trust. That’s what makes people stick around.

How I Got Over It:

  1. Filters. I’ll admit it—early on, I could not handle seeing my own face on camera. Filters blurred out my insecurities so I could just relax and talk.
  2. Practice. I started recording Instagram stories just for myself. No pressure to post—just getting used to talking on camera.
  3. Eventually, I hit publish. And surprise! No one showed up with pitchforks. Instead, people started DMing me because I was finally being human online.

Block #2: “I Don’t Know What to Say”

Ah yes, the classic Everything’s Been Said Before excuse. I used to believe that too. But here’s the thing—yeah, maybe the topic’s been covered, but not by you. Not with your stories, your take, your humor.

Think about it: Every real estate agent talks about staging. But what do you think about the latest staging trend? Hate it? Love it? Think it’s overhyped? Boom. That’s content.

How I Got Over It:

  1. Stop trying to be original—just be you.
  2. Ask yourself: What’s my take on this? What’s my experience with this? How would I explain this to my best friend over coffee?
  3. Realize that your audience follows you for a reason. They want your voice, your perspective, your weird little quirks. Give it to them.

Block #3: Thinking Everything Needs to Be Perfect

Perfectionism is just procrastination wearing a fancy hat. The longer you tweak, edit, and stress over a post, the longer you delay actually helping people.

And listen—big brands mess up all the time. I once saw a major company post a whole Instagram carousel where they accidentally left “blah blah blah blah blah” as a placeholder. And guess what? The world did not implode. People actually found it hilarious.

How I Got Over It:

  1. Call it what it is: procrastination. Every time I caught myself obsessing over tiny details, I reminded myself—“Oh, cool, I’m stalling again.”
  2. Give yourself a time limit. If I couldn’t finish a post in 30 minutes, I hit publish anyway.
  3. Remember: Done is better than perfect. And spoiler alert—your “imperfect” posts will still perform just fine.

Your Challenge: Record, Don’t Post (Yet)

Right now, grab your phone and record a message to your audience. Talk to the version of YOU from five years ago. What do they need to hear? Just do it for you. No pressure to post. Just practice.

And when you’re ready to hit publish? I’ll be cheering you on. 🚀
